What Level 2 Charging Is

A Real Home Charger, Not Just a Wall Outlet

The cordset that ships with your EV plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet and trickles in just a few miles of range an hour — fine in a pinch, painfully slow for daily driving. A Level 2 charger runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit, the same voltage as an electric dryer or range, and adds range several times faster — enough to refill most EVs overnight while you sleep.

An EV charger is a continuous load: it can draw its full rated current for hours at a stretch, so it needs its own dedicated circuit and breaker sized to code, never shared with other outlets. Because that's real, sustained demand on your service, an older or already-full panel may need an upgrade before the charger goes in. We run a load calculation first, install on a dedicated 240V circuit, and pull the permit and Con Edison coordination so the whole job is done right.

An EV charger adds a big, steady load to your service. These are the situations that decide whether a panel upgrade has to come first.

A 100-amp service that already runs AC and cooking has little spare capacity. A Level 2 charger may push it over the line, so a load calculation tells us whether your panel can carry it or needs to move up to 200A first.

An EV charger needs its own dedicated double-pole breaker. If every slot in your panel is already taken, there's nowhere to land the new circuit — which means a panel upgrade or sub-panel before the charger goes in.

Two EVs charging at once doubles the continuous load on your service. We size for both up front — sometimes with load management so the chargers share capacity safely — instead of maxing out a panel that wasn't planned for it.

NYC Specifics

Permits, Con Edison & EV Incentives in NYC

Installing an EV charger in New York City isn't a plug-and-play job. Adding a dedicated 240V circuit is filed with the Department of Buildings (DOB) Bureau of Electrical Control and must be done by a licensed electrician. Skipping the permit risks a violation and can complicate your insurance or a future sale — so we file it as part of the work.

Con Edison coordination

A Level 2 charger adds real, sustained demand to your service. Where the existing service or meter can't support the new load, the install touches Con Edison's side — and we handle that coordination, including a service upgrade when one is genuinely required, so the charger runs at full power without overloading anything.

EV-charger incentives

New York offers utility and state programs that may help offset the cost of home and commercial EV-charger installations, and eligibility and amounts change over time. We can't promise a specific figure, but we'll point you to the programs that may apply so you can check what you qualify for.

Co-ops, condos & garage charging

Charging in a shared or building garage usually needs board or management approval and an alteration agreement before any work begins. We've installed across NYC's housing stock and plan for that paperwork up front instead of hitting a wall mid-project.

What Drives the Cost of an EV Charger Install

We quote a flat rate after an assessment. These are the factors that move the number up or down.

Charger Type

A hardwired charger and a plug-in (NEMA 14-50) install differently. The unit you choose and whether it's hardwired or cord-and-plug both affect labor and materials.

Distance From the Panel

The farther the charger sits from your panel, the longer the cable run — and a long run may need up-sized wire to avoid voltage drop, adding material and labor.

Panel Capacity

If a load calculation shows your service can't carry the charger, a panel upgrade or load-management device has to come first — often the single biggest factor in the final number.

Indoor vs Outdoor Mount

An outdoor or detached-garage install needs weatherproof, code-rated equipment and conduit, where an indoor garage mount is usually a more direct run.

Single vs Dual Charger

Installing two chargers, or wiring for a future second EV, means more capacity and sometimes a load-management setup — which changes the scope of the job.

Permit & Inspection

DOB filing and the electrical inspection carry fixed fees. We roll these into your quote so there's no surprise line item at the end.

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always — it depends on your service amperage and spare capacity, which we confirm with a load calculation. Many homes with 200-amp service have room. An older or already-full 100-amp panel often needs an upgrade (or a load-management device) before a Level 2 charger can be added safely and to code.
Level 1 vs Level 2 — which do I need?
Level 1 uses a standard 120V outlet and adds only a few miles of range per hour — workable for a plug-in hybrid or very light driving. Level 2 runs on a dedicated 240V circuit and charges several times faster, refilling most EVs overnight. For a full battery-electric vehicle you drive daily, Level 2 is almost always the right choice.
How long does installation take?
A straightforward Level 2 install near the panel is often a single visit. The job takes longer if it involves a long cable run, an outdoor or detached-garage mount, or a panel upgrade first. We'll give you a realistic timeline after the on-site assessment so there are no surprises.
Tesla Wall Connector or universal J1772?
Both work — it comes down to your vehicle and how much flexibility you want. A Tesla Wall Connector is purpose-built for Teslas, while a universal J1772 charger works with virtually any EV (and any Tesla with the included adapter). We install both and can help you pick the unit that fits your car and future plans.
Hardwired or plug-in (NEMA 14-50)?
A hardwired charger is wired directly to the circuit — clean, permanent and often able to deliver higher power. A plug-in charger uses a NEMA 14-50 outlet, so it's easy to unplug and take with you. We install both to code; which is better depends on your charger, your power needs and whether the spot is indoors or out.
Can you install a charger in a detached garage or outdoors?
Yes. We install at detached garages and outdoor parking spots using weatherproof, code-rated equipment and conduit. A longer run from the panel may call for up-sized wire to avoid voltage drop, and we account for that in the plan so the charger delivers full power reliably.
Do I need a permit, and do you handle Con Edison?
Yes on both. Adding a dedicated 240V circuit is filed with the NYC Department of Buildings and inspected, and we handle that for you. If your install touches the service size, we also coordinate the Con Edison side. In co-op or condo garages we plan for board approval up front.
