Lumens, Dimming & Smart Lighting
For decades we picked bulbs by watts, but watts only measure how much power a bulb draws — not how bright it is. The number that actually matters for brightness is lumens. A modern LED can produce the same lumens as an old incandescent while drawing a fraction of the watts, which is exactly why the switch saves so much energy. When we plan a room, we think in lumens and placement, not in "how many bulbs."
Why LED saves energy
LED fixtures convert far more of their electricity into light and far less into wasted heat. That means lower running costs, far longer lifespan, and cooler operation — which matters for recessed cans tucked into insulated ceilings. Over the life of a fixture, an LED typically pays for itself many times over compared to halogen or incandescent.
Dimmable & smart options
The right light isn't one fixed brightness — it changes with the time of day and what you're doing. We install LED-compatible dimmers and smart switches so you can dial brightness up for tasks and down for relaxing, schedule lights, or control them by app or voice. The trick is matching the dimmer to the LED driver so there's no flicker or buzz, and that's part of what we set up.

Number of Fixtures
A single pendant is quick; a full room of recessed cans is a bigger job. The count of fixtures — and how they're spaced — is the biggest driver of labor time.
Recessed vs. Surface-Mount
Recessed lights mean cutting and patching ceilings and fishing wire through finished spaces. Surface-mount fixtures on an existing box are faster and simpler.
New Switches or Circuits
If a location has no existing wiring, adding a switch leg, a new box or a dedicated circuit adds work compared with replacing what's already there.
Dimmers & Smart Controls
Adding LED-compatible dimmers, smart switches or scene control costs more than a basic on/off switch — but gives you far more flexibility over your light.
Indoor vs. Outdoor/Landscape
Outdoor and landscape lighting needs weather-rated fixtures, buried or protected wiring and sometimes a transformer — more involved than a quick indoor swap.
Who Supplies the Fixtures
You can buy your own fixtures or have us supply them. Higher-end or specialty fixtures cost more, but the install labor is largely the same either way.
The honest version: there's no flat price for lighting — the number of fixtures, recessed versus surface-mount, any new switching or circuits, and indoor versus outdoor work all move it. That's why we don't quote sight-unseen. We look at the space, talk through the layout you want, and give you a clear price before any work begins — and the estimate is free.

Recessed vs. other lighting — which is right for my room?
Recessed downlights give clean, even general light and disappear into the ceiling — ideal for kitchens, living rooms and open spaces. Pendants and chandeliers add a focal point over islands and tables, track lights aim accent light where you want it, and under-cabinet lighting handles task areas. Most rooms look best with a layered mix, and we'll recommend the combination that suits your space.
What color temperature should I choose?
As a rule: 2700K warm white for living rooms and bedrooms where you want a cozy feel; 3500K neutral for kitchens, bathrooms and offices where you want clean, natural light; and 5000K daylight for garages, basements and task or work areas. You can also keep it consistent room to room, or use tunable LEDs that shift between warm and cool on demand.
Are LED lights worth the switch?
Yes. LEDs draw a fraction of the power of incandescent or halogen lamps for the same brightness, run far cooler, and last for years instead of months. Lower running costs and far fewer bulb changes mean they typically pay for themselves many times over. For recessed cans tucked into insulated ceilings, the cooler operation is a safety plus too.
Can you add dimmers and smart lighting?
Absolutely. We install LED-compatible dimmers, smart switches and scene or app/voice control so you can set the right brightness for any moment, schedule lights and group them into scenes. The key is matching the dimmer to the LED driver so there's no flicker or buzz — that pairing is part of how we set the job up.
Do you install outdoor & landscape lighting?
Yes — path lights, uplights, step and soffit lighting, and security or motion lighting. Outdoor work uses weather-rated fixtures and properly protected or buried wiring, and low-voltage landscape systems often use a transformer. We plan placement for curb appeal and safety, and wire it to stand up to the elements.
Will you cut into my ceiling for recessed lights?
Recessed lights do require cutting openings and fishing wire through the ceiling, but we keep it clean: precise cuts, careful routing and tidy trims. Where patching or paint touch-ups are needed, we tell you up front so there are no surprises. If you'd rather avoid cutting, surface-mount fixtures are an alternative we can suggest.
Do you supply the fixtures?
Either way works. We're happy to supply fixtures and recommend quality options that suit your space and budget, or install ones you've already bought. If you're picking your own, we can advise on what will work well with the layout and any dimmers before you purchase.
How long does it take?
It depends on the scope. A single fixture swap can be done in well under an hour, while a room of new recessed lights with switching and dimmers is usually a part-day to a full day. Larger whole-home or renovation lighting takes longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe with your estimate.
